This is my blog on generally any software that ends up in a web app…from server to web page.  It is maybe too large a scope, but we’ll see how it goes.  I pick up ideas best when I write them down, so this is partially a place I hope to use as a learning tool.

I use the web to find templates and examples for most of the things I create, so i also hope to give back a little and make this blog a useful resource that others can use.  If I post something here, it is because I could not find it somewhere else already, or I combined multiple other sources to create it.

Some things I have been working with lately:

  • Java/J2EE development – a little less of this lately.  In fact none for a about 2 years.
  • Lots of client- and server-side Javascript
  • Creating visualizations for applications using d3
  • Doing a lot of cool stuff with vector tiles in mapbox/leaflet

On the side..

  • Picking up python
  • Learning the internals of WordPress..
  • Getting into Mobile development for iOS and Android

Right now i’m working mainly in javascript and doing a lot of work parsing/processing vector tiles for maps, and using d3 and web workers to make it fast!  cool stuff.

  1. Hi Matt,

I came across your blog and did a bit of research about you. I see that you are currently at SmartOps working on web applications but want to reach out about an opportunity to break into something new, where you will have direct end-user impact and the opportunity to develop a revolutionary Android application for our start-up in the heart of San Francisco.

A bit about us- Our company Scribd is a Y Combinator and venture-backed (already profitable) startup. Our vision is to build the future of publishing, and as a Top 100 Site we are making significant progress! We are building an application that will revolutionize mobile reading, and the team is still very small, so there is an opportunity to get in early and have a huge impact. For more on us, check out this episode of Techcrunch Cribs featuring our incredible office (http://tcrn.ch/eerimF) and our tech blog (http://coding.scribd.com/).

We are looking for an Android developer to help build our publicly anticipated app ground-up. We are open to the right individual with strong fundamental CS skills and a passion to work in mobile (even though you haven’t full-time previously). The iOS team is in deep development (will launch first), so there will be a lot of buzz by the time we get to the Android release. This is a full-time employee position, which can afford a lot of future opportunity. Please let me know if you are interested and we can set up a phone call soon.

Thanks and look forward to hearing from you.
